Cricket target versus runs still needed

The target is the total a chasing side must reach. Runs still needed change as the chase progresses; they are not the same field.

Use a normal-chase example

If the target is 181 and the chasing team has 150, it needs 31 more runs to reach that target. This is an illustrative calculation for an unchanged target, not a prediction or a current match score.

Read the available time

The remaining balls and wickets provide context. A requirement of 31 from 24 balls differs from 31 from 6 balls, but neither guarantees a result. Convert over notation correctly when counting balls.

Check for revised conditions

Weather or competition procedures may lead to a revised target. Use the current target shown by the official match information rather than calculating solely from the original first-innings total. Confirm the innings and match identity first.
